Registration

Resistration is simple.  You simply click on the register button and follow the prompts.  You will need to give a username (this is the name that will appear along with your ads) and a password.  Your username must consist of only letters and/or numbers.  Other types of punctuation will not work.  Something like janedoe123 is the sort of thing one could make into a username.  The password is the same: letters and numbers.

Once you are registered, you can log in to the site.  After log in, you can click "My Account" in the upper right corner of the page to access you personal information.  Your account will show all of your ads, current and expired, as well as information about your profile, billing, messaging and more.  Users have the ability to send and receive e-mail within the site, allowing for inquiries about items that are for sale.

So what is the Market?  The Flute Portal Market is a paid classified ad service.  It is just like using the classified section of a newspaper or magazine.  You have to register on the site (you will also need to create a PayPal account if you do not already have one) and then you may place an unlimited number of ads.

Ad content needs to be appropriate to the existing categories on the site (this is not a place to try to sell your baseball cards, for example).  You can describe what you are selling, upload photos and set your price.  The market is open to both merchants and private parties, so both new and used items may be advertised.

THE FLUTE PORTAL MARKET IS IN NO WAY RESPONSIBLE FOR MEDIATING BETWEEN BUYERS AND SELLERS.  All users buy and sell at their own risk, just like when one uses the classifieds in the newspaper.  If a buyer or seller has any issues with another user, please don't contact me asking me to resolve it--I won't answer such requests.

How does billing work?

Simple.  You must have a PayPal account to post an ad, and when you complete your ad and submit it, your PayPal account will be charged based upon the fee structure listed below.

All ad sales are final!  Make sure that what you are selling falls into the accpeted categories.  You are not guaranteed a refund if your ad is pulled due to inappropriate content.

What is the duration of an ad?

When you post an ad, you will have the option of choosing how long it runs.  You can select 1,3,5,7,10,14 or 21 days.  If you select 21 days, there is an additional $1.00 fee.  Once your chosen duration has expired, your ad will disappear from the site.  However, all of your ads (both current and expired) can be seen in your account profile and they can be renewed with the touch of a button if your item does not sell.  This resubmission of the same ad does not bear any additional fee.  To renew an ad simply log in to your control panel and look for the drop down menu (its the only one).  From that menu select "expired ads" and you will see all of your ads along with a "resubmit" button.  Press it and your ad will go back into the Admin approval queue.

What happens if I sell the item?

If your item sells, you have the option of removing the ad, or simply marking it as "sold".  If you'd like to let the ad remain for the duration (to showcase your work, for example) you may do so after you have marked it as sold.  All of the options are shown on your account settings page.

What does it cost?

The fee for an ad is based upon the price that is being asked by the seller.

There is a flat .25  fee for every item listed, plus a percentage of the sale, scaled as follows:

Price range                    Percentage

0.01    to  24.99             2%
24.99  to 999.99           1.5%
1,000+                           1.5%

The first photo is free, additional photos cost .25 each.  Other voluntary options carry fees:

Bold type: .25
Highlight: .50
Search thumbnail fee: .25
Eye catchers: .50
Featured item fee: 5.95

What can I advertise for sale?

Well, obviously we want ad content to be topical as mentioned above.  Don't try to sell your car, for example.  Flutes, instruments, related accessories, music, etc.

If you are a merchant placing ad ad, you may sell individual items for a fixed price.

YOU CANNOT PLACE A GENERAL AD FOR YOUR BUSINESS:  If you wish to sell your work here, you sell it on an item-by-item basis with your retail price affixed to each individual item.

Private parties must follow the same approach.  You cannot place an ad that says "I have a bunch of flutes for sale at various prices--give me a call!"  Such an ad will be removed.  You must list your individual sale items and affix a price.

Can I link to other sites like ebay?

There is not built in function that allows the inclusion of hyperlinks.  However, a seller may choose to list a URL in the description of the item.

IN ALL CASES THE SELLER MUST STILL LIST THE RETAIL VALUE OF THE INDIVIDUAL ITEM BEING SOLD.  Sellers who wish to mention the URL of their websites may do so.

Can I include sound files or video?

No.  You can upload photos up to 1MB in size and they must fit into a 1000 x 1000 pixel size space.  To save hassle, it is recommended that you size your photos appropriately before you try to upload them (if they are the wrong height or width they might get cut off).
